An electric car runs partially on electricity and conventional cars are petrol (gasoline) or diesel-powered engine. Electric vehicles use a motor which is powered by electricity from batteries or fuel cell.EV's are cleaner when compared to conventional vehicles. It also depends on the electricity source and the type of vehicle.
EV's are expensive to purchase but have a lower cost of ownership. Cost to refuel an electric car is a fraction of the cost of gasoline. When you switch to the electric car you save up to 50000 INR or even more thus contribute to reducing pollution.
Transport ministry data shows that there are 400,000 registered electric vehicles in India.
Know About Launched and Upcoming Electric Cars in India to be considered
1. Hyundai KONA Electric
KONA Electric has already launched on 9-Jul-19 and the ex-showroom price starts from 23.71 Lakhs. Hyundai Kona is available in 15 dealerships across 11 cities in India. The driving range is 452 Kms upon the full charge. You can also book this car online HERE
2. Maruti Suzuki WagonR Electric
Maruti India plans to launch its electric car in 2020. This car will be having a similar look of WagonR Stingray. Expected price is twice the current WagonR approx 12 lakhs ex-showroom price
3. Tata Altroz Electric Car
Tata Motors announced that they will launch their EV in 2020. This car was revealed in Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. The launch price is expected to be between 10 - 12 lakhs
4. Tata Tigor EV
This car is available for users to drive but not available to personal buyers. However, you can get it for a day-use from car rental services like ZoomCar
Tata Tigor takes around 6 hours to charge from 0% to 80%
Tata Motors plans to launch this car in the next 12 months with the launch price of approx 10 lakhs.
5. Mahindra eKUV 100
This car was showcased in AutoExpo 2018 held in Greater Noida. It has the looks of KUV100 and has a similar design language, alloy wheels.
The Mahindra eKUV 100 will have fast charging capabilities and cover 150Kms upon full charge.
This car will also have competitive pricing of 10 - 12 lakhs and expected to launch sometime next year.
6. MG Motors eZS
eZS will be the second launch if MG Motors in India after the successful launch of Hector. MG Motors is also launching electric charging stations in India in collaboration with a Finnish company known as Fortum.
This car is available in the UK and will launch in India by the end of 2019. MG Motors eZS has a range of 262 Kms. MG Motors has priced eZS around 18 - 20 lakhs.
7. Nissan Leaf
The Nissan Leaf will be an imported product and cost around 30 lakhs in India. Nissan Leaf is the second most famous car in the world. Nissan Leaf will be powered by a 40 kWh battery capable of producing 148 PS of power and 320 Nm of torque.
The Nissan Leaf Indian version will likely have a 400 km battery range.
8. Tata Nexon Electric SUV
The current range of Tata Nexon SUV starts at 6.49 Lakh, so it is expected that the electric version of the car will be around 12 - 14 Lakh. Details of this car are very rare. Battery range is likely to be more than 300 Kms upon full charge. Tata Motors plans to launch this car by the end of 2020.
9. Tata Tiago EV
Tata Tiago EV is the fourth undisclosed electric car from Tata Motors and expected to launch in the next 18 months. It was also showcased during the 2018 Auto Expo alongside Tata Tigor EV. Tata Tiago EV is powered by an identical 16.2 kWh electric battery.
Tata Tiago electric range is expected somewhere between 180-230 km upon full charge.
Tata Tiago EV will get charged from 0% to up to 80% in 1.5 hours using fast charging.
